  • Day 3

Siem Reap – Banteay Srey & Small Circuit

Begin your day with a visit to Ta Prohm, a temple that has been left in much the same condition as when it was discovered by French explorer Henri Mouhot in 1860. The intertwining tree roots, which seem to strangle the temple ruins, are a vivid reminder of nature's unstoppable power and the transient nature of human endeavors. Following this, explore the grand pyramid of Takeo, one of Angkor's tallest temples, which remains unfinished possibly due to a lightning strike or the extreme hardness of its sandstone. Next, visit the remains of an ancient Angkorian bridge that once spanned the Siem Reap River, showcasing the Khmer empire's engineering prowess akin to that of the Romans. For temple enthusiasts, optional visits to the smaller temples of Chau Sey Devada and Thommanon are available. In the afternoon, travel through the traditional village of Preah Dak to the 12th-century temple of Banteay Samre. Built by King Suryavarman II, this temple has been extensively restored and features remarkable carvings on its pediments, despite the over-quarrying of sandstone leading to the use of laterite in its construction. The highlight of the day is Banteay Srei, often referred to as Angkor’s ultimate art gallery. This petite pink temple, known as the "Fortress of the Women" due to its intricate carvings, is considered the jewel of Angkor-era sculpture. Initially believed to date from the later Angkor period, inscriptions suggest it was built by a Brahman in 967, though some historians argue it could be from a later period, representing a peak in Khmer sculpture.

  • Day 4

    Siem Reap Departure

In the afternoon, we travel through the traditional village of Preah Dak to the 12th century temple of Banteay Samre. Built by King Suryavarman II, the genius behind Angkor Wat, this temple has been extensively restored. The temple is unique in that over-quarrying of sandstone led to the use of laterite for the roofed corridors. The pediments above the inner doors here include some of the most accomplished carving from the Angkor period. We continue further north to Banteay Srei, Angkor’s ultimate art gallery. This petite pink temple is the jewel in the crown of Angkor-era sculpture. The elaborate carvings here are the finest found in Cambodia and the name translates as ‘Fortress of the Women’, thanks to the intricate detail here, considered too fine for the hands of a man. Originally believed to date from the latter part of the Angkor period, inscriptions at the site suggest it was built by a Brahman in 967. However, some architectural historians have suggested that the inscriptions may date from an earlier structure on this site and the temple is in fact later, marking a high-water mark in Khmer sculpture. Transfer to Siem Reap airport for departure to next destination.
